Healing Arts
New Hanover Regional Medical Center offers integrative therapies through the Healing Arts Network (HAN), a group of certified therapists who work with the medical teams to improve the quality of life of our patients. We use a variety of mind and body approaches that complement medical care and promote healing. Patients learn to relax, manage pain, express feelings and try new coping skills.
Healing Arts Network Programs:
Expressive Therapy When patients are able to express their feelings, they are more able to deal with poor health. They can do this by writing, drawing and painting and by focused breathing, relaxation, meditation and guided imagery.
Music Therapy Music can have powerful effects on patients’ health. It can improve mood, change heart rate, and lower blood pressure and stress. Patients may listen to or create music and even write songs to help them express feelings and decrease pain while learning how to relax.
Dance/Movement Therapy Gentle rhythmic movement based on patients’ own comfort level and abilities, uses both mind and body. Patients express feelings verbally and in movement. This helps them relax, feel less alone and more in control, and deal with their pain.
Massage Therapy Massage Therapy helps patients relax. This lowers blood pressure, boosts the immune system and decreases pain. Full body or partial massage gives patients an overall feeling of comfort.
Therapeutic Touch By moving the hands over the body, the therapist helps balance the patient’s energy. This subtle work helps the patient to relax and heal. Therapeutic Touch is scientifically based in nursing practice.
Yoga Gentle Yoga movements, simple stretches, guided relaxation and awareness of one’s breathing help improve blood pressure, flexibility, balance and other body functions. Yoga reduces stress and brings peace of mind.
CranioSacral Therapy This therapy uses light touch to release restrictions in the body and create balance. A special process, called SomatoEmotional Release, can help relieve the lasting effects of trauma and illness. It is effective for a wide range of medical problems.
Pet Therapy The Healing Arts Network provides trained pet therapy dog visits with patients. Interacting with these affectionate animals calms, comforts and lifts the spirits.
Haircuts for Men/Women, Shampoo and Sets - Patients can have a sitting with our licensed cosmetologists.
"The Therapeutics" - Patients and their families are invited to sing songs of their choice once a week when the group "The Therapeutics" visits patient rooms.
Tai Chi/Qi Gong - Slow excercises and breathing techniques to increase the flow of energy through the body. An instructor makes patient room visits.
