2008 Year In Review
New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation ended its fiscal year on September 30, 2008 with another recordbreaking fundraising year realizing more than $4.4 million in gifts and pledges to support New Hanover Regional Medical Center. This total includes gifts from 1,242 new, first-time donors as well as 1,582 donors who had not made a gift in the prior year - a true indicator that the mission to provide the very best medicine here at home is very important to you and our community. At year end, the FoundationÕs assets totaled $8.5 million, a 21% increase over last year.
Revenue
More than $3.7 million in gifts and pledges were received from individuals, physicians & physician groups, corporations and private foundations in 2008 to support the mission and vision of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. In addition, more than $600,000 was realized from our special events, $3,630 from gifts inspired by Thank You Notes Newsletter, and $21,754 from tribute gifts - gifts made in honor of or in memory of a special someone.
The FoundationÕs special events in 2008 were also extremely memorable starting with Pink Ribbon held in October 2007. The Pink Ribbon event realized an unprecedented number of third-party (community) events to raise money for support of the Coastal Care Van for uninsured women to receive cancer screenings and for comfort bags to women undergoing cancer treatment.
The Founders' Gala held in January 2008 - was a sold out affair and raised money to purchase three (3) Vein Viewers for our pediatric patients. This technology allows physicians and nurses to see the veins of our smallest patients thus reducing the number of 'sticks' necessary to administer life-saving intravenous medications and treatments.
The 3rd annual Red Dress luncheon, held in February 2008, raised funds for cholesterol screenings, cardiac risk assessments and educational materials for women and heart disease.
The annual Celebrate the Gold event was held in March 2008 to celebrate the nurses at NHRMC and recognize their hard work while raising money for the Nursing Resource Fund - to provide $250 to each NHRMC nurse for continuing education.
The 2008 Coastal Classic Celebrity Golf Tournament held the last weekend of April was dedicated to Karl Davis and raised more than $100,000 to support the new Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital. A patio in the new facility was named in Karl's memory.
Expenses
Fundraising expenses totaled $581,335 and include expenses related to the Foundation's special events, annual giving, direct mail and capital campaign. Operating expenses totaled $112,911 and included donor recognition, professional fees, continuing education and supplies. New Hanover Regional Medical Center provides support for the Foundation's salaries and benefits, rent and depreciation. Fundraising and operating costs for the Foundation in 2008 were 18¢ to raise a dollar, meaning that 82¢ of every dollar raised was used for the purpose for which the gift was intended.
