Building and Renovation
New Hanover Regional Medical Center is in the midst of the largest expansion in its history to add the space needed to keep pace with the growing community and provide an environment that accommodates the latest technology in a setting that is comfortable, peaceful and conducive to healing. The NHRMC Board of Trustees approved the project in August 2005 and ground was broken in January 2006.
The project includes:
Surgical Pavilion
Opened June 30, 2008, the Surgical Pavilion gives patients access to the best of surgical services in a spacious, convenient and comfortable building. The Pavilion is an 186,500 square foot building located in the back of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Patients can go directly to the Surgical Pavilion for scheduled procedures instead of checking in at the main registration desk in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There are 26 operating rooms large enough to accommodate the equipment needed for laparoscopic procedures. The building is also equipped with advanced information systems, including patient tracking boards so clinicians and waiting family members can see exactly where a patient is in the prep, surgery and recovery process. Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital
The opening of the Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital in September 14, 2008 was a huge milestone in the history of health care in Southeastern North Carolina. The 195,000 square foot building has all private rooms, including in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is the first all-private designed NICU in the state. It also houses the region's first Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The building provides comforting and spacious environment for women and children to heal and babies to be born. Patient Tower Renovation
A top-to-bottom renovation of the NHRMC inpatient tower includes making nearly all the rooms private, with just one or two rooms on each of the nine floors large enough to be semi-private if needed. With more private space, there is additional room for family members to visit and provide support. Patients also have more time with their nurses and caregivers as new technology allows for charting to be done at bedside computers. New carpeting and enclosed business centers create a quieter environment and updated HVAC systems allow patients to set room temperatures to their individual preference. The first two floors were completed in June 2009. The last two floors are scheduled to be finished in December 2010. For more on the Patient Tower Renovation, click here.
